Jaylen Johnson, a former college football player, accidentally shot and killed his mother thinking she was an intruder trying to break into their home.

Monica McNichols-Johnson, 56, was trying to enter the back door of their Olivette home, located in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri when Jaylen shot her.

Jaylen immediately called 911 after the shooting, but his mother died at home, despite the life-saving efforts made by his girlfriend.

William Goldstein, the attorney for the 25-year-old, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “He hasn’t stopped crying.”

Goldstein said Jaylen kept a gun in the house for protection after he was robbed at gunpoint.

According to his attorney, Jaylen played football in college, is employed, and has no criminal history.

Prosecutors have charged Jaylen Johnson with manslaughter and armed criminal action.

His bail was set at $100,000.
